Corby trial postponed after collapse
17:55 AEST Thu Apr 14 2005

A young, innocent Australian woman’s life hangs in the balance.

Accused drug trafficker Schapelle Corby collapsed amid scenes of hysteria and chaos in a Bali court as she waited to hear if Indonesia wants to put her to death.

Corby appeared to faint in the witness chair just before prosecutors had been scheduled to say what punishment they think the Australian should face if found guilty of smuggling 4.1kg of cannabis into Bali.

She was sent to a nearby hospital under guard and her trial was adjourned for a week after the head judge warned her against feigning illness.

It was the second delay to the trial because of her health in a week.

A physician, Dr Connie Panglahila, who treated her in the courtroom, said Corby was suffering from high blood pressure and a lack of fresh air. Family and supporters said she was severely stressed.

Corby collapsed, crying and holding her stomach.

Scores of journalists, camera crews and photographers crushed in around her in the poorly-ventilated Denpasar District Court, which was also packed with onlookers and Corby's family.

A female doctor called to the court by Australia's consul in Bali, Brent Hall, helped the Gold Coast woman, who was lying on a wooden bench.

She was surrounded by a throng of prosecutors, lawyers, police, journalists and her family.

Corby later sat with her head in the lap of her translator.

Amid hysterical scenes and shouting the three judges postponed the trial for a week, ordering Corby be returned to prison and to undergo a medical check.

Corby's sister Mercedes vaulted the public barrier in the court to comfort her sibling, who she said had been "hysterical" ahead of the trial.

"Her eyes were rolling in the back of her head," she said.

Corby's outraged father Michael stood screaming at journalists and court officials amid the chaos, demanding they clear a space around his daughter.

"On your bike and piss off," he yelled.

"Let her out of the joint."

Her mother Rosleigh Rose, who wept as Corby collapsed, also demanded the crowd back off to allow her daughter to breathe.

Doctors said later Corby needed at least two to three days rest.

The trial judges ordered a full medical report on Corby be filed by next Wednesday. They also asked the media to allow her more space next week.

Chief judge Linton Sirait warned Corby against playacting, telling her at one point: "You sit quietly. Don't make it up. If you make it up we will force the court to go on."

Corby was taken immediately from the court in a police van for medical treatment.

It was dramatic climax to a day that started in chaos.

Earlier, the 27-year-old former beauty student arrived at the court handcuffed to an Indonesian female prisoner, who also fainted in the media crush, dragging the screaming Corby down as well.

Mercedes Corby rushed in to help, yelling angrily at journalists to "Leave her alone!" before striking an Indonesian reporter over the head with her handbag.

Police were forced to carry the two prisoners, still handcuffed, to a holding cell.

Mercedes Corby said her sister was "hysterical" and still suffering from stress and diarrhea which forced the postponement of her trial appearance last week.

"Did you see her, getting carried like a baby, screaming and then being taken to the cell screaming?" she asked.

Gold Coast businessman and supporter Ron Bakir said later of Corby: "She's not doing too well - she's under a lot of pressure and she is deteriorating day by day."

Corby faces a possible death penalty by machine gun firing squad if convicted of smuggling cannabis in her unlocked body board bag last October. She has denied the charges.

The Australian government has appealed to Indonesia for clemency and Prime Minister John Howard said he felt for Corby.

Latest News: Actor Russell Crowe has appealed to the Australian government to act to save Schapelle Corby from life in jail over what he says is a questionable charge.

Mr. Downer says he just wants to see justice done.

"I would hope Australians wouldn't think that Schapelle Corby was necessarily in more trouble because she is in Indonesia than anywhere else having been arrested at the airport with four kilograms of cannabis," he said.

"We don't know whether she's innocent or guilty and in our system there's a presumption of innocence but I think all of us in Australia should let the court case flow through in the normal way."

Well Mr. Downer, the trial is not in Australia and there is no presumption of innocence in the courts in Indonesia, where you are guilty until you can prove your innocence.

I would suggest, that if the courts should find Schapelle Corby guilty and sentence her to death by firing squad, that the ramifications will be felt around the World, and that not only will this Government be unable to hold office in the next election, but the support you recently observed by the Australian people in assisting Indonesia and their people during their recent need, will not be repeated in the future.

If this was your Daughter or Son, would this still be your excuse to not do anything until it is to late. I don't think so - You would do everything within your power to assist the Defense Attorneys, in obtaining the evidence that is needed to obtain an acquittal.
